So, I was very excited when I heard that Rick Wright was writing a book about sparrows, the first treatment of North American sparrows since 2001, possibly the first book about sparrows of North America, depending on your definition of that geographic area. This is a reference book with many layers, diverse uses and a distinct personality.

I’m happy to say that Laura Erickson and Marie Read have written a book, Into the Nest: Intimate Views of the Courting, Parenting, and Family Lives of Familiar Birds , that is not too cute and that does not anthropomorphize. Part Two: The Family Live of Selected Species” describes and illustrates the family lives of 49 species in 25 chapters.

A little bit of research when I got home unraveled the ways of publishers here and in Great Britain. It is organized taxonomically, with families identified by first scientific and then popular name. ffrench’s descriptions are delightfully uneven, reflecting his personal experiences with the birds, his research, and his personality.

The guide presents 69 species and 1 subspecies, from “NEW WORLD VULTURES: Cathartiformes” to “OSPREY: Pandioninae” to “FAMILY: Accipitridae” (Kites, Hawks, Eagles, Hawk-Eagles), to “FALONIDS: Falconidae” (Falcons, Forest-Falcons, Caracaras, Kestrels, Merlin). The Species Accounts are the research-at-home section.

Families, or in some cases subfamilies, are tied together with brief descriptions of shared family (or subfamily) characteristics: physical, behavioral, sometimes habitat, nocturnal or diurnal flight, and if the species comes to lights. But, then there are families like the Royal Silkworm Moths,which are larger, much much larger.

But I have been sick with different kinds and forms of cold since the beginning of December with no interruption, and so has my entire family. The first detection outside Africa occurred in Vienna/Austria between 2001 and 2006. Okay, I meant to write an entertaining post. I honestly did. Sickening!
