Little Big Year – Week 34: We visit Colorado and Texas

With Wyoming and South Dakota in our rear view mirror, we look toward Colorado, and a hot spot I have been anxious to visit. So, we were off and away to Dalhart, Texas, and the Rita Blanca Reservoir. We had no real plans to go to Texas, but the last report from Rita Blanca was very impressive. species – 224.

Not far behind is California (348, up from 297), followed by Arizona (294, up from 155), Florida (233, up from 227), New Jersey (223, up from 199), Oregon (221, up from 209), and Texas (218, up from 106). Thus, there are now seven states with 200+ observed species. The state with the largest increase was Arizona , with 139 species added.

Wrap-Up of 2012 Big Year Birding

Mary Beth Stowe hoped to tick 350 species along the lower Texas Coast this year and came up a bit short with 332. Lynn Barber was chasing the South Dakota big year record of 332 and managed to smash it with 350 species. Not only that, but they raised money for the Houston Audubon Society and the Katy Prairie Conservancy.
