In the spruce-birch forests above 5,000 feet in elevation, the Black-caps live out their lonely existence as the representative of the species in the far south. The time, it seemed, was finally right. This is the story of the last one.

I really didn’t have anything in particular I wanted to see but I was sorely tempted to head out to Heckscher Park in Suffolk County to check out the trio of Hudsonian Godwits that had been seen there regularly for a couple of days. Where I live, there are two species of lemmings, the Brown Lemming ( Lemmus trimucronatus ) and the Collared Lemming ( Dicrostonyx groenlandicus ). They are able to breed at the age of 5-6 weeks so it is easy to see, given the right conditions how quickly their population can grow. A Collared Lemming on a Beat Writer’s hand.
