I could imagine that timing the earlier emergence of insect prey at the breeding grounds is particularly problematic for insectivorous species. This abundance by no means meant theat they are easy to see, and I got quite a sore neck from peering into the canopy. Eurasian Blackcaps, while even more common, are also always a pleasure.

I really didn’t have anything in particular I wanted to see but I was sorely tempted to head out to Heckscher Park in Suffolk County to check out the trio of Hudsonian Godwits that had been seen there regularly for a couple of days. I had all morning this past Saturday to look for birds. You can see it up there at the top of the post.)

In fact, there are probably few species so well-known and well-loved. In the spruce-birch forests above 5,000 feet in elevation, the Black-caps live out their lonely existence as the representative of the species in the far south. And there are some birds I have not seen in North Carolina because I am kind of a lazy lister.

Here are a few of my recommendations for some such esteemed members of the Costa Rican avifauna: Forest Football Chicken or FFC (Great Tinamou) – Since tinamou sounds like the perfect representation of an oddly-shaped bird with a small head that gives beautiful tremulous vocalizations, I am sorely tempted to leave this one off the list.

While we continue to decimate our short and tall grass prairies many species reach their inevitable peril. Here in Colorado many species are affected, but perhaps none more than our beautiful Mountain Plovers and Ferruginous Hawks. They often build their nests in open savannas where it sticks out like a sore thumb.
