The arrival of 48 monkeys on a flight from China this weekend has brought Air Canada under fire for shipping primates destined for research laboratories, but the airline says it is obliged by federal law to accept monkeys as cargo. Air Canada is one of a small number of airlines that continues to transport these primates, Kite said.

There is also a research institute dedicated to wilderness: the Aldo Leopold Wilderness Research Institute is an interagency facility located at the University of Montana. It is the only federal research group dedicated to studies needed to manage the National Wilderness Preservation System.

The announcement below comes verbatim from the Pacific Free Press.they still need approval from the Canadian Transportation Agency though. Today, more than 40 animal advocacy organizations across Canada praised Air Canada for its recent decision to stop shipping non-human primates into the country for use in research laboratories.

Asking myself that question quarter of a century ago, I snooped through a collection of research papers in the Natural History Museum in Belgrade (before the Internet, I really had to go through papers) and found the “Ornithological Notes from the Pancevo Wetlands 1909-1917” by dr Jeno Nagy. Locations, dates, species and numbers, right?

Basically, hornbills get paid by evolution to eat fruit, digest the fleshy parts, and regurgitate or defecate the rest – a means of seed transportation that is apparently quite attractive to many plants despite the yuck factor involved. For example , fallen figs do not seem to mind catching a ride with Oriental Pied Hornbills.
