Protection for a fee: Band-tailed Gulls and Red-legged Cormorants

Frigatebirds don’t occur in the cold waters of the coast of Peru and Chile, but Band-tailed Gulls (Larus belcheri) have developed similar strategy. This system of “fee” in exchange for protection from being overwhelmed by many thieves seems to work. It is, to some extent, a win-win situation.

Outstanding Pied Oystercatcher parenting!

There are sixteen pairs of Pied Oystercatchers and they have varying success at raising young birds. The main problem appears to be feral cats, but there is also predation from birds of prey and the parent Pied Oystercatchers do their utmost to protect their young. The last time they successfully raised a chick was in 2012.
