Each pair has a strategy and sometimes it is successful and sometimes it is not. This year one pair of Pied Oystercatchers has once again proven to be able to raise young. They are one of the older pairs and they have raised several young over the years, but only ever one has been fledged each year.

Frigatebirds don’t occur in the cold waters of the coast of Peru and Chile, but Band-tailed Gulls (Larus belcheri) have developed similar strategy. The gulls breed their young and the cormorants raise their young successfully as shown by the size of the two young birds in the photos.

These “grouse” could be too sneaky for such heavy-handed, accidental strategies. With what seemed to be extreme caution, they slowly moved into sight, raising and lowering their orange crests as they ninja walked onto the trail. However, seeing them doesn’t involve flushing them from the undergrowth.

She successfully raised a chick in 2007, which has been living in a large flock to the south of Broome. These parents have a strategy where they nest away from the reef and then walk the chicks the 2 kilometres there within a few days of hatching. Nest site with 3 eggs-one white!

Predators that rely on lemmings, like the Snowy Owl , took advantage of the bounty and had great breeding success, raising large broods which, after the lemming population crashes, dispersed far and wide. Last summer saw lemmings at a high point in their population cycles. Foraging, napping, fighting. I’m a messy eater.

There are sixteen pairs of Pied Oystercatchers and they have varying success at raising young birds. Last year they successfully laid three eggs and they successfully raised three chicks , which is the only record that we are aware of in the local area. The last time they successfully raised a chick was in 2012.

Perhaps early birds were gliders, then from this gliding strategy, semi-powered flight emerged, then eventually true powered flight. The most like strategy of investment by bird parents to evolve is probably both parents caring for the offspring, probably taking turns at the nest, and bringing food back to the chick. Since both eggs and chicks are nest-bound and highly vulnerable, while one parent is off in search of food, the nest can be robbed (probably by some owl).
