Sure, there were Summer and Scarlet Tanagers and a few “good” warblers, but most of the migrants were sailing on those south winds over our heads to other parts of Texas. Multitudes, hundreds of Brown Pelicans and Terns–Least, Common, Foster’s, Sandwich, Royal, and Caspian. You just need to know where to look.

Both Vu and the company were ordered to pay $40,000 to the Texas Park and Wildlife Foundation and a $5,000 fine and put on eighteen months probation after being found guilty in federal court. Seaside’s employees denied shooting any birds; however, owner Vu admitted to shooting six pelicans to prevent them from eating his fish.

At Cano Negro, the stormy weather gave us a few birds rarely if ever seen at this inland freshwater wetland complex; Laughing Gulls , a Sandwich Tern , and two Brown Pelicans ! Spectacled Owl from another day.

Some things still seemed out of reach ( Texas , for instance, seemed about as likely a destination as the moon) but I began to do things with the purpose of “building my list” in earnest around this time, not so much for the sake of the list itself, but to see these birds that I’d always wondered about.
