Let’s get right into it, shall we? Number 8 – Brown Pelican. During my favorite birding event of the year, the annual Big Sit at Fort Tilden in Queens in October , we had hit a lull and were desperately trying to scrape up a few more species when Matthieu spotted a pelican and all was right with the Big Sit once again.

However, these islands that were predator-free sanctuaries eventually turned into ecological sinks. Brown Pelicans are not an unusual sight on the California coast. Raptors and other predatory birds have largely rebounded, and there seems to be be no shortage of Brown Pelicans, Peregrine Falcons and Bald Eagles. What a horror!

My regular cycling to Marlow Lagoon and Sanctuary Lakes during our stay has been productive and varied for birds as the water levels change. One lake has had a lone Australian Pelican in for several weeks and in the last few weeks there has been the arrival of Magpie Geese and numerous Radjah Shelducks. Australian Pelican.

It doesn’t take long and you are right on the coast and I have walked north in the past to follow the trail to Westgate Park , but on this occasion I once again set off to the south. By the time I reached the Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary the light was starting to fail at the end of what had been a lovely day of walking.
