The 18th Annual Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival is less than a month away and while we don’t have snow down yet here in New York City I am pretty sick of cold weather and could use some warmth and Florida sunshine! Last year we had an amazing array of great birds and also were lucky enough to see an otter up close.

Then, there were Eurasian Otters , which I’ve seen twice. The first time I spotted some movement on the water, focused my binos to see a Common Moorhen , but, hey, there’s something deep behind it, focusing further and seeing two otters diving and surfacing, swirling and playing. And how about Black Storks, otters and eagles?

For a land that can lay claim to an abundance of such wonderful native wildlife, it’s peculiar that the national symbolism of Scotland is so populated by mythological creatures. Swans swim on a small pond on the distillery grounds and deer and otters can be found by a trail that runs beside the burn.

On Saturday I met up with Seth and we headed out to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge where we nearly froze to death and I refused to wear gloves because it is April and gloves aren’t necessary. Not much of a vignette but I have a nice picture of the sparrow so I feel that I had to mention it. Besides, suffering brings birds, right?
