During a brief moment of insanity after the death of my pet kitty Brady in 1991 (at the age of 17), I attended Vermont Law School to study Environmental Law. South Royalton, Vermont is a picturesque New England town that in 1991 didn’t even have a stoplight. I'll get back up to speed for next week, but without further ado.

That made me wonder why someone would put so much energy into a species that is regular in New York and not a lifer. As of Friday, 11 May, Anthony had already seen 283 species in New York State, a blistering and likely record-setting pace ( Richard Fried is the current record-holder with 352 species seen in 2011 ).

New Jersey/New York. The Refuge in partnership with other publicly owned (State of Vermont) lands has been designated a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge is designated as an Important Birding Area for Missouri. The refuge is already open to sport fishing.

The heat map is revealing: Unsurprisingly for a site founded and run by two New Yorkers (one of whom literally wrote the book on birding New York), the Empire State boasts the highest number of species (316). California (297) is next, followed by Florida (227), Oregon (209), and New Jersey (199).
