My girlfriend (and later fiancée) Katherine and I had planned an eight-day vacation to the Bay Area, mostly to visit her sister in inland Napa County, but also to see as much of San Francisco as we could. It was our first real vacation away from New York together and we were really looking forward to it.

In the United States, a few of those conundrums are making news. In the New York metro area, not-quite-hurricane Sandy unleashed a significant amount of devastation back in October 2012, with storm surge and severe flooding along shorelines. The birds nest in the span, which is being replaced by a new bridge.

So if you can get to New York’s Central Park, San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, or Mexico City’s Chapultepec Park, I’m sure it will be worthwhile… in 2021. I understand that the really large ones, however, can be fascinating biological islands, especially during migration.

If you live north of the San Francisco Bay area in California like I do, or north of Delaware on the east coast, you would most likely be looking at a Greater Yellowlegs. The Shorebird Guide , Houghton Mifflin Company, New York, New York a. I must say, however, that geography can play a role also.

And hey, speaking of empire – is there any more beautiful clap-back to European colonization than the fact that various species of psittacine, exploited and stolen and in so many cases extirpated by eager collectors, have now become noisily acclimatized free-flying life forms in the parks of Brooklyn and San Francisco and especially London?

I am a westerner who has lived in San Francisco and Portland my entire birding life. But Northern Cardinal, Catbird, and White-throated Sparrow do not appear until the 270s, during a visit to Central Park while on business trip to New York City. Thus, my “good birds” are likely the opposite of an eastern birder.
