With the lack of trees, it was a surprise that a woodpecker is still taking up space. In one stretch of rocky outcropping, a group of Ground Woodpeckers foraged along boulders searching for ants and as their name suggests, they forage on the ground in sparsely vegetated country. Products that the herders bartered for.

As I learned this week, locals cook the unripe fruit into meat dishes, and eat the ripe fruit raw… as do birds! The apparent deliciousness of this fruit gave me my best photos yet of the beautiful (and noisy) Yellow-winged Cacique , as well as a hungry female Gray-cheeked Woodpecker.

There was a Black Woodpecker , twice, and showing really well, European Robin posing in the bush by the roadside and several Water Pipits at the water’s edge. Like the tube-nosed birds, new world vultures detect the smells of rotting meat carried by the winds. The Herbst touch receptors found in bills can also be found in the tongues of many birds and this may aid birds like hummingbirds and woodpeckers that use their tongues extensively in foraging.
