They are ridiculously unafraid of people there – so the cynic in me suspects that swan meat is not regarded as tasty by the Japanese (another explanation, that the Japanese just like animals too much, can presumably be discarded given the country’s very principled approach in insisting on the right to kill whales).

While it also eats dead meat and carcasses like its relatives, its favorite food is palm nuts. The White-eared Barbet is another bird species with an annoyingly sensible Latin species name, leucotis (white-eared). But the same species was never found again. If you are a hammerhead, does everything look like a nail to you?

Take a moment to tell your governor you agree we must get our LGUs out of the meat industry. Many say you can’t eat meat and be an environmentalist.

The shark is thrown back because shark fins are often more valuable than the meat itself. Claims for shark fins include relieving joint pain and curing cancer, though no research is available to back any of these claims. The high rate of finning seriously puts many shark species at risk of disappearing completely.

In addition, since the species is popularly kept as a pet or reared for meat by the local peoples, historical trading has resulted in small introduced populations occurring on other islands in the region such as New Britain. With such a response, I had basically written it off as a species I had any chance of seeing.

The very first thing we notice about this large member of the Galliformes is that there is a wild version and a domestic version, and although the two are rather different, they are both given the same species name, Meleagris gallopavo. This is not entirely unknown among domestic animals, but many domesticates have no living wild version.
