There were no mammals, little game, and not many birds either. Brush-tailed Possums were brought from Australia to help start a fur industry. Possums still strip our native forests, ferrets and stoats and possums still devastate our native birds. Part of the world they wanted to transport was natural.

As most people know cats, both feral and domestic, have a pretty big impact on wild birds and other wildlife, and the effect of mammals is particularly profound in New Zealand. Even wiping out a majority of mammals from the third biggest island is a challenge, and not just logistically.

This is quite a big deal for an island group that had no mammals save bats for millions of years. The principal poison used in New Zealand its sodium flouroacetate , commonly known as 1080.

Keep finding decapitated mice/rats under car

We do have a possum and a raccoon that live somewhere on the property. but that's pretty much it for mammals. None of my neighbors have cats and I'm only aware of one dog owner blocks away. And I have found one small dead garden snake in the street. Lots of squirrels, chipmunks, deer, rabbits.

I’ve been a fan of this particular peculiar Australian mammal my entire life, and more than any bird I wanted to see it here. As it got darker we found a Bush Thick-knee foraging in the grounds (their calls at night were quite something), and then began to find mammals.

Lake Eacham, Mt Hypipamee and Mount Molloy

One final surprise was a Green Ringtail , an endemic possum. They are also apparently one of the easiest mammals to see in the forests of the Tableland. Eastern Whipbirds where about and conspicuos, both in their voice an more surprisingly visually. They are usually pretty hard to see.
