After a similar procedure, Moya’s watch-me-pull-a-rabbit-out-of-my-hat trick produced a fuzzy nestling Eastern Screech Owl. The birds were living like city apartment dwellers … the upstairs neighbors were the woodpeckers, downstairs were the screech owls. Sounds like a sitcom! They’re called ‘habitat poles.’”.

Normally I feed vultures, as well as hawks and owls, defrosted mice and rats. My mammal-rehabber friends give me their unfortunates, as well. He then ate a screech owl, a robin, two squirrels, a mourning dove, three chipmunks, and a rabbit. Did I have an answer for him. Sometimes a defrosted chick. He ate my last quail.

Lots of squirrels, chipmunks, deer, rabbits. but that's pretty much it for mammals. I think I heard an owl once last winter. We do have a possum and a raccoon that live somewhere on the property. And I have found one small dead garden snake in the street. Idk, generic store brand bird lol. Ocassional robins, sparrows, crows.

Many are familiar with dissecting owl pellets, but several birds will caste a pellet including hawks, eagles, gulls, herons and heck, I once witnessed a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher hack up a small one. Above is a pellet from one of a pair of Great Horned Owls that nested a few blocks from my apartment. Was that a cardinal beak?

We had a Barred Owl they were feeding Doritos.”. “We We have a resident Eastern Screech Owl who was fed dry oats for ten days BY A VETERINARIAN!” The baffling, mind-boggling public.

They took dogs to Australia, chickens across the Pacific, rabbits to England, horses to the New World, and then brought potatoes back. There were no mammals, little game, and not many birds either. Rabbits are still an agricultural pest. In many ways, that is exactly what happened.

And it had to start at 5:45 am, because if we wanted owls this was when we had to get them. It was a dark and foggy ride into Nags Head Woods, the only forest of any sort on the islands, and we paused every few hundred meters and listened for owls.
