You can fly direct to Mexico City from many American cities; while you can fly direct to Morelia from Oakland, Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas, and Chicago. For those of us in North America other than the Gulf coast, the only time we might see a Magnificent Frigatebird is after a storm. I happened to work at that facility, for International Bird Rescue at the Los Angeles Oiled Bird Care and Education Center , part of the Oiled Wildlife Care Network.

On Magical Mystery Tour , The Beatles’ famous 1967 album, there is an odd song called “Blue Jay Way&# which was written by George Harrison while he waited for Derek Taylor, who got lost trying to meet Harrison in the hills above Los Angeles on a foggy night.

The Lab operates All About Birds , which has free and authoritative information on identification and bird biology, as well as Birds of North America. Both operate websites that provide useful content, including lists of major birding festivals (there are now dozens across North America throughout the year) and birding hotspots.

Yet, somehow, on 31 May one was discovered on Puddingstone Reservoir, the large man-made lake that is the center of Bonelli Park, a nearly 2,000 acre expanse in San Dimas, just east of Los Angeles. First of all, the species only occurs semi regularly in North America in a small patch of Alaska where it occasionally breeds.

However, the Sunda islands span over a large region, and if the teal’s range is projected onto North America, it covers the area between Los Angeles and the panhandle of Florida. Now, “restricted to the islands of…” does not sound very extensive.
