In the grand scheme of things, this is just a small town and only one person was killed due to injuries suffered. Kelly Preheim was talking about the large numbers of Snowy Owls on the nearby National Wildlife Refuge. There were 23 cows killed; some had to be shot up in trees where they were stuck. As we shot out into the ocean we received a lecture on the Kaikoura Canyon, its wildlife and the Sperm Whale from Hayley, a local girl who was our guide.

You soon adapt to the early mornings and early nights to coincide with the wildlife! In fact the lake was too deep for a lot of bird species, but the track in the bush was very productive and our 200th bird after two weeks was the Red-capped Robin! Sadly we did see a lot of road kill and no doubt a result of people driving at night.
