Consolation species

That trip was to take my wife and I to Turkey, Jordan, and southern Spain, with stopovers near Paris. And while it was to be a work (ministry) trip, I had still managed to schedule it right during the migratory peak along these two major corridors. This female Rose-throated Becard also gave me my best photo so far of its species.

White-faced Ibis at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge

I spotted a Eurasian Wigeon amongst the American Wigeon right out of the gate, but that wasn’t the best sighting of the day. Golden Swamp Warbler

It’s better that the species name, citrea , obviously refers to the French car-manufacturer Citroën, whose automobiles are known to be lemons*. The female bird came by too, a stunning bird in her own right if she didn’t have to constantly be compared to the ridiculous male. This is not a bird for cubicle farms!

Best Bird of the Year 2011

juvenile Parasitic Jaeger by Larry Jordan Jochen enjoyed a plover : My Best Bird of the Year is a White-tailed Lapwing I “twitched” in Germany in June. That was a cool bird sighting because the eagle had to swoop around among power lines and overpasses and high rise buildings, being right in the dead middle of the city and all.

Duck Migration

Mostly the ducks were Red-breasted Merganser and Greater Scaup , the two most prevalent species on the pond, but there were a few other birds mixed in as well.
