In Australia we definitely have our fair share of invasive species and the main problem is that we are such a huge land mass with such a small population. The population of Australia is concentrated mainly around the city areas along the coast and many invasive species have been able to spread with ease.

Typically these birds hunt at night and are very shy. Our trip to Botswana produced some great owl species besides the reclusive phantom, including some of the smallest and some of the largest owls in Africa. One of only three true fishing owls, Pel’s Fishing Owls have adapted to their unique hunting techniques in several ways.

We lose a handful of species, mostly waders flying across the whole Pacific but also a cuckoo flying just half of it. The more rural shoot pigs, deer and ducks. I don’t ski, or hunt, and I sadly haven’t been to the tropical Pacific for a while. A few South Island birds spend the winter on North Island.

The spotted hyena displays greater plasticity in its hunting and foraging behaviour than other African carnivores it hunts alone, in small parties of 2–5 individuals or in large groups. During a hunt, spotted hyenas often run through ungulate herds to select an individual to attack. Each two-toed foot has a long, sharp claw.

But, as with so many other species, these birds have been left to do their own whistle blowing. West Indian Whistling Ducks are the largest of the eight different whistling duck species. The whistling duck call carries with it the crimes of big business, the failures of governments and the ignorance of irresponsible hunters.

They all went extinct since 1500 and they are only eight of the nearly two hundred species that have blinked out since then. Sure, we try not to introduce snakes, rats, cats, goats, pigs, and a host of other creatures to isolated islands. The eight species above still exist. A species, wiped off the earth, never to exist again.

“Indigenous pig sows?…Sure, …Sure, we got lots of ‘em javelina and wild hogs too” But I explained to him that I was a hunter of a different kind and that I was looking for tiny owls and not wild pigs. And, like the Pearl-spotted Owlet of Africa, this species often hunts in the middle of the day.
