As I’ve posted before they are efficient and merciless hunters. They do like to supplement their diet with small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects. They are aided by excellent binocular vision that lines up with their dagger-like bill. This one was so good it caught two fish at a time (just once though).

The relevant numbers involving cats, the people that cherish them, and the birds (and small mammals and reptiles) that they kill are all too large to mean much; you might as well use the funny word “gazillions.” And keeping cats, natural hunters, indoors is, as a matter of biology and of common sense, not the healthiest state for them.

Rattlesnakes are fair game, as are other reptiles, scorpions, frogs, birds, and insects. Car collisions, feral cats, and run-ins with hunters also cause problems, even for this speed-racer. These ground birds have been clocked going 20 mph, though their coyote predators can go more than twice that.

Even though the English name may indicate that it mainly feeds on crests, it really mostly eats reptiles, primarily tree snakes (HBW). This species is fairly widespread, with 21 subspecies, some of which may eventually turn out to be full species. ” Some superstition surely should be supported.

The White’s Thrush will keep pretending to be a reptile. But then, I am not a hunter, and do not understand them either). This place is also the preferred option for those birds – such as this S winhoe’s White-eye – which prefer showers to full baths.

The Refuge is now home to nearly 200 species of birds, over 50 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles and amphibians, and a wide variety of insects, fish and plants. For example, years ago, Eiton Tchenrov postulated that the wild progenitor of the domestic dog, some subspecies or another of wolf, could benefit from overlapping its breeding territory with human hunters. The humans tended to keep away a range of predators that might take the pups as a form of interference competition.
