Weasel-Pecker

10,000 Birds

I don’t mean to beat a dead horse here. At first I thought the now famous photo of a Least Weasel riding a Green Woodpecker was fake. I could not image a medium size woodpecker carrying a weasel.

GUYANA–Simply Delicious Birding!

10,000 Birds

A vicero gets his horse ready to look for giant anteaters. Another lovely red skittle that I had the privilege of spotting on my first visit to Guyana in 2008 is the aptly-named Blood-colored Woodpecker found in the coastal areas in and around Georgetown. 10,000 Birds

I am driving down the dirt track in the Carska Bara Ramsar site (Serbia) and a cloud of dust closely follows me, like a rider on a pale horse. Through a narrow and barely visible gap, we enter the forest, bursting with ever-active Great Spotted Woodpeckers and filled with European Robin song. Just for fun, it seems – joie de vivre?

Paddling Piney Z Lake

10,000 Birds

Four months ago, a full parking lot wouldn’t have caused my blood pressure to spike. Only one kayak and one canoe passed us as we explored.

The Outer Banks after a Tropical Storm

10,000 Birds

Someone had told me a group of Red-cockaded Woodpeckers called this patch of forest home, and we were determined to find out if he was right. No, we didn’t see the woodpeckers we sought, but I was thrilled with everything we did see! As we walked along the road, tall pine trees created a comfortable dappled shade.
