I don’t mean to beat a dead horse here. At first I thought the now famous photo of a Least Weasel riding a Green Woodpecker was fake. I could not image a medium size woodpecker carrying a weasel.

A vicero gets his horse ready to look for giant anteaters. Another lovely red skittle that I had the privilege of spotting on my first visit to Guyana in 2008 is the aptly-named Blood-colored Woodpecker found in the coastal areas in and around Georgetown. A beautiful Blood-colored Woodpecker poses on a tree trunk.

So, do you prefer rambunctious horses or big cats better? I got a good dose of seaducks this weekend up at the mouth of Irondequoit Bay; the most interesting species amidst the mixed flocks was a lone Bufflehead hobnobbing with Common Goldeneyes.

I’ve rescued field mice to horses, and everything in between. It’s so much easier to delete a picture than to end the life of a mortally wounded cat-caught bird, like this Downy Woodpecker … who is alive, but not for long. Dear Outdoor Cat Owners/Feral Cat Supporters, Does the photo above sicken you? It sickens me.

I am driving down the dirt track in the Carska Bara Ramsar site (Serbia) and a cloud of dust closely follows me, like a rider on a pale horse. Through a narrow and barely visible gap, we enter the forest, bursting with ever-active Great Spotted Woodpeckers and filled with European Robin song. Just for fun, it seems – joie de vivre?

Four months ago, I would have taken to the crowded pathway at Lafayette Heritage Trail Park like a horse to pasture, reveling in the outdoor exercise and rare time away from my new baby. Four months ago, a full parking lot wouldn’t have caused my blood pressure to spike. Only one kayak and one canoe passed us as we explored.

Someone had told me a group of Red-cockaded Woodpeckers called this patch of forest home, and we were determined to find out if he was right. No, we didn’t see the woodpeckers we sought, but I was thrilled with everything we did see! As we walked along the road, tall pine trees created a comfortable dappled shade.
