Northern Arapahoes Given Right to Kill Eagles for Religious Purposes

A federal government decision to allow a Wyoming tribe to kill two bald eagles for a religious ceremony is a victory for American Indian sovereignty as well as for long-suppressed religious freedoms, the tribe says. The Northern Arapaho share the Wind River Indian Reservation in central Wyoming with the Eastern Shoshone Tribe.

Birding and Safari-ing South Africa with the ABA

The small group was a good counterpart to the large, convivial ABA Safari group of 98 birders. That’s a lot, and the organizers of the safari did an excellent job of creating an environment that offered small group birding during the day and a birders party every night. I am a birder, after all.

Their range of breeding is literally only very southern Wyoming to very northern New Mexico. They will undoubtedly be flying in small groups so expect to hear a few of those together in succession. Try hiking a Colorado 14,000 foot mountain and your chances of having these guys at your feet rise exponentially.

We had stopped at one of the massive over-looks near Roosevelt Lodge, when a small group of Pine Siskins flew all the way across the canyon, and landed in the tree above me. In the past, seeing some of these Ring-necked Ducks would have been rather scarce, so here is a shot of the small group that were on the larger pond. It was gone so quickly, there was no chance to get a photo.
