Orange-winged Parrots may be abundant elsewhere, but here their presence is wholly overshadowed by a tremendous mixed flock of Crested Oropendola and Yellow-rumped Cacique. Larger reptiles also are in abundance, including several skinks and ground lizards, Gold Tegus, and Green Iguanas. I even saw a sleeping capybara this morning!

The mongabay.com portal has compared data on a unit of area basis of the percentage of the total global number of species of birds, amphibians, mammals, reptiles, fish and vascular plants. And small country often equals short distances and easy traveling. The best season is December, followed by June-July.

Penguins, Parrots and Wine on Matiu / Somes Island

Spotted skink ( Oligosoma lineoocellatum ), one of the island’s many reptiles The west coast of Matiu / Somes with New Zealand flax ( Phornium ) and a cabbage tree ( Cordyline australis ). Across the water is the Miramar Peninsula, where the Hobbit is presently being filmed. Oh well, better luck next time!

Week 15: The Darwin area has some great birds, and Crocodiles!

The guide Tony was very professional, knew the area, the plants, reptiles, and without a doubt, the birds. I cut this out of a huge group of birds, in order to show the Magpie Geese. It was so good, we re-booked with him for a sunrise cruise the very next day. Here is a nice shot of that Black-necked Stork.

They’ve Got an Awful Lot of Birds in Brazil.

Our group saw over 400 birds on our 15-day tour of the Pantanal, Cerrado and the Amazon (Cristalino Lodge). The hollowed-out bones connected to the lungs for respiration that we see today as a key bird adaptation to the aerobically challenging behavior of flight existed in many dinosaurs that were as far way from being bird-like as, well, as a T-rex is from being your pet parrot. What evolved into what? The forelimbs … they do nothing!
