Normally the slender, fairy-feathered shorebirds are shy and avoid the humans who encroach on their territory. On a sunny day in early April Gay transported the egret to Chincoteague Island, joined Elton in his boat, and motored out to where the group had gathered. Snowy Egrets like to keep their distance.

When you see a falconer transporting their bird or walking with a group, the bird might be in a dark crate or hooded. Go home now!”

A couple bends along the trail and it seemed as if we were out of human contact by a thousand miles. As these odd cotingas called to each other, a small group of Spix’s Guan rummaged through the high branches of the canopy, running with ease on swaying limbs. A Screaming Piha cemented the ambience as one of true wilderness.
