Birdy Boating in Baringo

Ubiquitous Egyptian Geese dabbled in the shallows while a diminutive Squacco Heron stood motionless in some tangled vegetation over the water. Drifting slower and looking closer, we observed a tiny Malachite Kingfisher hunting in the sheltered shallows. Squacco Heron. This tiny kingfisher thoroughly excited everyone on board.

This ruined… something… is where people shelter to seawatch. Among the same rocky shores as the geese can be found plenty of Eurasian Oystercatchers, Ruddy Turnstones, Eurasian Curlew and if you are lucky Purple Sandpiper. Brent Geese, with Wales behind. Hilbre looking north towards Liverpool.

Covenham Reservoir

The only shelter is at the Sailing Club and there are also picnic tables there too. The reservoir offered Tufted Ducks , Eurasian Wigeon , Gadwall , Northern Shoveler , Common Pochard , Eurasian Teal , Eurasian Coots , Great Crested Grebes , Little Grebes , Canada Geese and Greylag Geese. It is a sheltered area with numerous picnic tables for the people visiting and bird feeders for the feathered variety of visitors. Greylag Geese in front of Wild Bird Cafe. Little Egrets and Egyptian Geese were showing well from that hide despite the wet weather. View from Wild Bird Cafe.

Most were similar to what we had seen in September, with the addition of Magpie Geese in the flooded long grass. This time we decided to make use of the Rest Area and use the shelter and shade in case of a torrential downpour, which had occurred earlier in the day. The dam was very full and there were numerous species of birds present.
