The Rose-ringed Parakeets of Heidelberg

Heidelberg Zoo to the south-west of Neuenheimer Feld, all over the place but most often at the seals enclosure and the adjacent kiosk. The zoo has a small colony of genuinely wild Grey Herons (watch them compete with the seals for the fish!), Yes, the Egyptian Geese there are countable. Common Redstart and Fieldfare.

Hilbre, the Sometimes Island

What first attracted me to the island was the chance to see Brent Geese (Black Brants to North Americans) which can be found on the rocky shore (they used to number in the twenties when I first visited a decade ago but now there are hundreds) and the chance to see Grey Seals across the estuary on the sandy banks off North Wales.

Birding Sweden on the Fly

Additionally, you can enjoy a meal at the restaurant or climb to the top of Sweden’s tallest lighthouse, the Långe Jan (Long Jon), for an even more breathtaking view (and possibly catch a glimpse of some seals). The skies were full of thousands of Greylag Geese , Pink-footed Geese , Barnacle Geese and Brent Geese on the move and in the shallow water there were already hundreds of Bar-tailed Godwits , Eurasian Oystercatchers , Dunlin and Eurasian Curlew. Thousands of Geese on the move on dusk. Eurasian Curlew.

Birding around Kununurra

As we reached the end of the sealed section of Weaber Plain Road we noticed that the water truck had been along the unsealed section to supress the dust and the Fairy Martins were busy taking advantage of the wet mud available. There were also Purple Swamphens around the edges of the lagoon and Green Pygmy Geese further out.
