It was on the side of the road in a field at Blue Chip Farm, a large horse farm near the town of Wallkill. How did I pick the one smaller goose out of the flock of bigger geese? Even if you don’t you will see remarkable variety in the Canada Geese you find and will gain new appreciation for a very common bird.

Before I delve into details about the poem I should probably share it with you so we have a text in common: Purple Martins If we were such and so, the same as these, maybe we too would be slingers and sliders, tumbling half over in the water mirrors, tumbling half over at the horse heads of the sun, tumbling our purple numbers.

Currently, A Chance for Bliss sanctuary is home to 96 residents including 25 horses, 22 dogs, 8 goats, 7 pot belly pigs , 4 sheep, 2 steers, 5 ducks, 5 geese, 5 cockatiels, 4 rabbits, 3 chickens, 3 cats, 1 turkey, a one-winged pigeon, Hines, and a turtle, Bart. The oldest dog, Max, is 17, while the oldest horse, Prince is 36.

Still, there are plenty of other birds and animals to see along the way, including Glaucous and other gulls, geese, herds of sheep and Icelandic horses. There you will find more breeding terns, gulls and dozens of Graylag Geese. Not many cars pass through so watch out for them hanging around on the pavement.

My colleague Doug wrote me an email describing the whereabouts of these “rosy finches” and my wife had to manage my excitement with horse tranquilizer… What a fantastic little birds. Late summer 2023 the lakes and ponds had been empty, presumably because the ducks and geese were moulting. I flew into Denver from Mexico.

We passed through a town called Paradise, Montana, where a woman was leading a horse across the lawn of the post office. A cruise by the shore revealed some Canada Geese , Common Goldeneye , and Bufflehead. A mountain range slipped away beneath us.
