It was on the side of the road in a field at Blue Chip Farm, a large horse farm near the town of Wallkill. In 2004, in a long anticipated decision, the American Ornithologists’ Union decided that the tiniest types of the Canada Goose were actually a completely separate species – the Cackling Goose , Branta hutchinsii.

Hundreds of birds all huddled closely together, dangling from the jagged ledges, seemingly separated by species in separate levels along the cliff. Thankfully the Puffins and Razorbills (arguably the most photogenic species) perch on the uppermost ledges, making them readily available for close-ups. Total Species: 37.

My colleague Doug wrote me an email describing the whereabouts of these “rosy finches” and my wife had to manage my excitement with horse tranquilizer… What a fantastic little birds. Late summer 2023 the lakes and ponds had been empty, presumably because the ducks and geese were moulting. I flew into Denver from Mexico.

We passed through a town called Paradise, Montana, where a woman was leading a horse across the lawn of the post office. A cruise by the shore revealed some Canada Geese , Common Goldeneye , and Bufflehead. We passed a decrepit mini-golf course where large plaster dinosaurs tilted drunkenly against the winter-sere lawn.

Basically, this species is so dimwitted, it doesn’t know how to survive. Because, Pink Pigeons are not capable of doing the tasks required to create and bring up children of the species. Don’t these birds care about propagating their species? Horses bolted. They have a hard enough time with Canada Geese.

Then a small flock of Canada Geese caught his eye and the chase was on! He was chasing the geese and I was chasing him! I was not concerned for the geese because they could easily escape the uncertain steps of a toddler but for Desi in case one of those geese decided to take a stand. A Greater White-fronted Goose !
