For once, eBird gives a good description of the Asian Glossy Starling, calling it a “Fierce-looking, large songbird” As are humans, this species is fairly urbanized – it “sometimes enters urban areas to roost, e.g. in Singapore” (HBW). Well, you could always pretend to fall asleep. Or move to another seat.

And while the scientific species name kasumba sounds like some frightening new fitness trend or a dancing game performed on cruise ships, it is apparently just the Malay term for red. Trust me, the species name makes sense for the male, though not for the female. It is also classified as Near Threatened. The dangers of being a geologist.

As we headed for the F train, one of the local Northern Mockingbirds launched into a rendition of the classic multinote car alarm – whoop whoop whoop, be-boop be-boop be-boop, etc. Both gull and mockingbird are so in place in this unwilderness, so seemingly at home dealing with noise and human bustle.

Spring through summer is baby season, and the human population ventures outside and finds little creatures in their backyard, their garden, their porch, the edge of the trail, the sidewalk, the train platform, etc.

I know plenty of people still detest Vick for what he did, but if there are protesters at his games or outside the Eagles’ training facility, I haven’t heard about them. And in his cameo appearances in the two games since NFL commissioner Roger Goodell lifted his suspension, Vick hasn’t done anything to cause a commotion, either.

By year three, the adults were practicing the eagle equivalent of human “hover parenting.” It really looked like a game of tag. As the weaker juvenile became stronger, its flight mentor stepped up the game, though I didn’t realize it at first. That made me wonder about the dynamics of their relationship.
