The Bearded Vulture looks surprisingly like the Night King in “Game of Thrones” Probably not a coincidence. Given that it is hard to mention one of my favorite bands, the Mountain Goats, in a birding blog, these photos of blue sheep are probably the best opportunity I will ever get. A juvenile nearby. Blue Sheep.

By this I mean applying the term antelope to cover all of the family Bovidae, which would include the sheep, goats and ox. It isn’t just tourists and game hunters that like them though; Painted Wolves are also big fans, as they are easier to bring down than the larger species but have more meat to eat than a small duiker.

It should surprise no one that someone brought horses, or goats, or chickens. There were no mammals, little game, and not many birds either. But man cannot live on bread alone, and the homesick settlers wanted more than just game. But hedgehogs? Greenfinches? What exactly was going on. First of all they wanted useful species.

These vast and rugged lands of savanna, hills, gorges and rivers still protect some of Ethiopia’s largest extant herds of typical African savanna game, including African Elephant, African Buffalo, Giraffe, Lion, Leopard, African Wild Dog and numerous species of grazers. Yellow-billed Stork. A Konso village perched atop a terraced hill.

Even Desi had to stop playing stick games and pay attention, however, when two curious juvenile Gray Jays came flying quietly in to make sure we weren’t up to no good ( Gray Jays have a monopoly on being up to no good in the mountains).

These beaters usually take the form of grazing herds of game and domestic animals, and large flocks of carmine bee-eaters may gather overhead. Little Bee-eaters are commonly found in all of Africa’s famous big game parks and have even taken to residing in golf courses, where they nest in holes excavated in the bunkers.

Of course, there were plenty of big game around, and so I will post a few of those shots at the end of this posting. The Rocky Mountain Goats were the same thing, saw them, got a shot, but from 800 yards away, it really isn’t much to write home about. You know, the Bison, Elk, Bears and Wolves.
