I learned of the trip right as it had been delayed and made a vow that I would be on that ship. Finally in 1799, the first visitors on this volcanic land were a group of French seal hunters who were after the fur seals that can be found hauled out on the beaches for fur and oil, which almost wiped out the local population of the species.

It’s not fecal material, but parts that are not digestible like fur, bones and the exoskeletons of insects. For example, since eagles and hawks tend to rip their prey apart and have stronger digestive acids, their pellets look like wads of fur. He was so excited when I described what I had and came right up to meet me.

This was the local name meaning “ugly” used for these primates by the people of the Gonder area in northern Ethiopia when the German naturalist Rüppell “discovered” this species for science in the 1830’s. Suddenly the atmosphere was right and the sky opened. You look at photos taken by drones of Australian Fur Seals around Phillip Island and count them.
