Acclimatisation Societies of New Zealand

10,000 Birds

New Zealand has a very odd biota these days. There are the endemics, which are odd in their own way, and then there introduced species, which are so varied in their type and origin that you get the feeling you’ve arrived at the aftermath of a small zoo that escaped. If New Zealand had a poor fauna, they would enrich it.

Royal Shags and Tricky Parakeets: Birding Queen Charlotte Sound

10,000 Birds

As I said last week , I’ve decided to try and knock off a few of the New Zealand endemics and specialities that I haven’t seen before over the coming year, and the first place that sprung to mind was pretty close, just across the Cook Strait in the Marlborough Sounds. Spotted Shags are endemic to New Zealand.

Kaikoura in the Autumn

10,000 Birds

It wasn’t quite winter yet, with all the species that brings, but already some summer species like the Hutton’s Shearwater and Salvin’s Albatrosses were gone. A New Zealand Fur-seal. Multiple visits to Kaikoura in different seasons are giving me a better idea of the variability of the area.

Where to See Kiwi (and other birds) During the Rugby World Cup

10,000 Birds

This makes it a particularly exciting time in New Zealand as the Rugby World Cup begins in two days, and the competition is being held right here in New Zealand (I would imagine they might be more excited if they hadn’t just lost two matches to Australia and South Africa, their big rivals in the Tri-Nations).

Failure to launch

10,000 Birds

I only saw a few species I could get in the small park near where I was staying, and not even as many as I could have gotten there. The objective wasn’t even birds, it was fur seals. I’ve spoken before about the positive impacts marine reserves are having around New Zealand, so it is nice to have one around here.

24 Hours (or so) in Kuala Lumpur

10,000 Birds

Living in New Zealand is fun and all, don’t get me wrong. Whether or not species are lifers or not in Asia for me is actually something of a guess, as my note-taking when I visited the region 10 years earlier could charitably be described as sloppy, and while I have some lists I lost a lot of sighting.

Offshore Sea Life ID Guide: West Coast–A Book Review

10,000 Birds

But, I did take many photos, and used the book, in spurts during the trip and more closely afterward, to identify three seabird species, two expected (Sooty and Black-vented Shearwaters) and one a surprise. It does not include near-shore, coastal species, like Brown Pelican, Elegant Tern, and Harbor Seal.
