Acclimatisation Societies of New Zealand

10,000 Birds

New Zealand has a very odd biota these days. They took dogs to Australia, chickens across the Pacific, rabbits to England, horses to the New World, and then brought potatoes back. So that New Zealand would end up with quite a few species of animal not originally found here is hardly surprising of itself.

Kaikoura stricken

10,000 Birds

One of the ships helping the stricken town is the USS Sampson, the first US ship to visit New Zealand since the 1980s. Kaikoura is New Zealand’s finest birding destination, and seeing it brought low is a terrible blow. Formerly a fishing town it’s economy is now geared towards tourism, particularly ecotourism.

Royal Shags and Tricky Parakeets: Birding Queen Charlotte Sound

10,000 Birds

As I said last week , I’ve decided to try and knock off a few of the New Zealand endemics and specialities that I haven’t seen before over the coming year, and the first place that sprung to mind was pretty close, just across the Cook Strait in the Marlborough Sounds. Spotted Shags are endemic to New Zealand.

Where to See Kiwi (and other birds) During the Rugby World Cup

10,000 Birds

This makes it a particularly exciting time in New Zealand as the Rugby World Cup begins in two days, and the competition is being held right here in New Zealand (I would imagine they might be more excited if they hadn’t just lost two matches to Australia and South Africa, their big rivals in the Tri-Nations).

Penguins, Parrots and Wine on Matiu / Somes Island

10,000 Birds

When it comes down to it New Zealand is all about islands. Somes, less interestingly, was a rich backer of the New Zealand Company called Joseph Somes (who never went near the place). The island represents one of only three places in North Island that has this New Zealand endemic. I’ll work on that.

Kaikoura in the Autumn

10,000 Birds

The rocks here are particularly good for New Zealand Fur-seals, but we also saw Variable Oystercatchers , Black-fronted Terns, Caspian Terns , White-fronted Terns, Red-billed Gulls and Kelp Gulls. A New Zealand Fur-seal. It certainly helped my year list! You really can’t go wrong with Kaikoura!

Failure to launch

10,000 Birds

The objective wasn’t even birds, it was fur seals. I’ve spoken before about the positive impacts marine reserves are having around New Zealand, so it is nice to have one around here. It wasn’t fur seals, or even eciting birding, but it was fun to poke around. Which brings us to yesterday.
