A mile later, there’s a traffic jam in front of us, where everyone stands still. There are no traces of the mist any more, the sun is finally out. Protest indeed!

The poor Mountain Bulbul carries the scientific name mcclellandii , after Sir John McClelland (1805–1875) … … even though said man mainly worked as an ichthyologist … … apart from also being sent to north-eastern India to identify if tea could be grown there.

Pel’s Fishing Owl, where were you? The Black Heron – besides looking rather cool, though not really very black – also has an interesting fishing technique. In a 1946 paper , it is called “under-wing fishing”, while nowadays the term “canopy fishing” seems to be preferred.

I observed my first GS eagles in India some 8 years ago, then the first for Europe in Greece only last December , and finally I have them in my home country list. Usually only several birds overwinter in Serbia – the biggest count ever was less than 10.

In the east, this species can be found along the east coast of Africa, the Nile Valley,and into parts of the middle east and India and southeast Asia. Unlike most herons, Cattle Egrets do not eat fish, although the occasional toad or frog has been noted. There are two main subspecies, the nominate B. ibis and the eastern B. coromandus.
