My third trip was six months spend working on a monkey project in the jungles of Uganda. This time I’ll be working with Wildlife ACT in Zululand, helping that NGO monitor wildlife in a range of reserves and parks in the east of South Africa. Ugandan Mangabeys were part of my family once. It makes economic sense too.

To Spotlight or not to Spotlight?

In fact, it’s hard to think of a wildlife watching activity I’m more conflicted about, other than perhaps alomost industrial levels of diving in fragile reefs (or the remains thereof). On the one hand it can be an outstanding opportunity to see wildlife you usually don’t, and if done carefully it doesn’t do any harm.

Great Tit Telomeres, Baby Talk, Brainy Birds

They used Great T**s from non-urban and urban areas, and mixed them up through breeding, to rule out any possible family history of telomere length. Urban environments are expanding rapidly, and with urbanization come both challenges and opportunities for wildlife. They found that cit dwelling Great T**s aged faster than expected.

Birding crème de la crème: Asia – Corbett to Taman Negara

Knowing that there are reserves with long lists of 600 or more species, I set my threshold at more than 600 birds… and found only a few such hotspots. In early November 2020, there were 15 countries with more than 1000 species eBirded so far. Other than that, there are barely a few hotspots with over 500 species.
