I didn’t travel much this year, with a June family trip to California and Nevada and a four-day trip in July to Trinidad and Tobago being my only opportunities to get birds not in the northeastern United States. The Snowy Owl invasion and everything that came with it. Not only that, but I learned that Snowy Owls can fly !

Great Shearwater – At this point, seabirds are my weakest family in Queens with the most species having reported in the borough that I have not seen. 318 – Burrowing Owl , 16 May 2019: An unbelievable find and a thrilling chase, this bird at Big Egg Marsh was as as astonishing as it was unpredicted. Sooty Shearwater – Ditto.

I did finally get Snowy Owls in Queens , even if they did cause a bit of controversy. I also appreciated Mississippi Kites not too far from my job, great birds on the coast of Queens , and more wood-warblers. We had a wonderful family vacation in Germany and the Czech Republic during which I managed to do a bit of birding.

That larger clade is in turn sister to a clade containing the four remaining totipalmate bird families, which do still seem to be related, and which needed a new order name once pelicans were removed. But meanwhile, let’s look at the four avian families that comprise the brand new order Suliformes.

For example, take the Mississippi Kite (above), photographed at the Dairy Mart Ponds in Tijuana River Valley, between San Diego and the Mexican border. Taxonomic tweakings and reshufflings of birds on the Family and Genus levels are too many to count. Let’s get to it then. 1) Rare bird reporting has come a long way.
