India is to amend its wildlife crime laws to protect the country's tigers, a government minister said. Environment and forest minister Jairam Ramesh said that speeding up justice as well as hefty fines are needed to strengthen the Wildlife Protection Act. Birding Tongbiguan, Yunnan (part 1)

The species name athertoni is derived from Lt. Atherton (1797-1827), a naturalist (whatever that means exactly) and a member of the British Army in India. Unfortunately, there is not much literature on the species except for the inevitable analysis of the mitochondrial genome. This is not a putdown, just a statement of fact.

They’ve Got an Awful Lot of Birds in Brazil.

News flash–I just received the trip report from Carlos, and the tally is 419 species recorded, of which 16 were heard only; plus Ian and I saw an additional species before the tour started, courtesy of Paulo Boute. The source of this ranking, BirdLife International, lists Bolivia as currently having 1,439 bird species, including 18 breeding endemics. The guide covers 1,433 species, the number of birds documented at the end of 2014, the cutoff point for the book.

We view them as our enemies when they eat our crops and as an extension of our family when we see them at our feeders. We worship birds, we hunt birds, we protect birds, and, yes, we eat birds. So, I just sit here, amazed at this book.

Mareeba Wetlands Just north of the town of Mareeba are the Mareeba Wetlands , a large lake reserve that protects both wetlands and northern savannah. If I had more time I could have hiked around to find one of the star attractions, Gouldian Finches , but I had gone there mainly to find two of my target families, storks and cranes.
