Before coming to Costa Rica on a permanent basis, I knew and accepted that there would be some things I would obviously miss right away (like the DiCamillo bakery , Viola’s subs, family, and friends), and unforeseen aspects of life later on. We get migration in Costa Rica too but there are some similarities and differences.

By this I mean applying the term antelope to cover all of the family Bovidae, which would include the sheep, goats and ox. It isn’t just tourists and game hunters that like them though; Painted Wolves are also big fans, as they are easier to bring down than the larger species but have more meat to eat than a small duiker.

The species is fairly widespread in the Western Pacific, ranging from New Zealand to Japan, and contrary to its name it isn’t actually a true snapper (family Lutjanidae), but is instead a member of the porgy and sea bream family (Sparidae). Its a powerful demonstration of the potential of marine protected areas.

After writing this last sentence, I looked up the species in the HBW and found the sentence “Song poorly documented” in the appropriate section, while with regard to calls, the description is that “call is a two-note raspy nasal ‘ryeeh-reh’”. In New Zealand, the Spotted Dove is an introduced species.

This past weekend the listservs, Facebook, text services, Twitter, word-of-mouth, weather radar, the calendar, and the entrails of a sacrificial goat all indicated that migration was happening. Our families, on the other hand, might have been a bit upset at the warbler fever that overtook even the most resistant birder.
