Half a decade ago, in a little mountain town about 60 miles northeast of San Diego, a feral kitten dragged his front left leg uselessly. Each family section starts with a brief description of the birds within that family, their common physical and behavioral traits, and range of habitat. Even during the breeding season the birds appear to be quite unwary of humans.

If you had your choice of one bird family to pursue, to seek out and observe and photograph and kvell over, which one would you choose? A passion for one bird family is also very useful. I’m surprised that the book doesn’t include images reflecting some of the hummingbird and human history Dunn writes about in such detail.

I’d been volunteering at rescues through my young adulthood, and I was training as a cat socializer, teaching terrified felines — the unlucky victims of cruel people — to trust humans again. All of these afflictions are human-caused and largely preventable. It’s tribal and familial. One typical, blue-sky, L.A. I was mortified.

I come from a large family: five sisters, two brothers and almost everyone has kids. Most of my family lives in Indiana, but thanks to social media we can easily keep in touch. Case in point: some of my family members have become active with feral cat colony organizations. I have mixed feelings about TNR.

The most common habitat you’ll drive through is modified human farmland, although particularly in the hills you’ll find large areas of forest (although this habitat is typically harder to road bird in. Feral Turkey are also quite common. But these aren’t the only large ground-loving birds you might encounter.
