Chongming Island in winter

A number of species use Chongming as a wintering spot, not just the Cinereous Vultures I already mentioned in a previous post. Ferruginous means rust-colored, but I have yet to see any rust looking as good as this species. Several species of buntings are using the Chongming fields and the roadside scrub as wintering ground.

I like seeing as many species as possible on my life list, year list, state list, patch list, any kind of list. But even in summer I can usually count on 60+ non-endemic species per visit, and in winter, a decent effort can usually result in 80 or more species. I confess: I am a lister.

Like the Huia and kokako the Saddlebacks suffered with the introduction of mammalian predators, and in fact the South Island Saddleback came breath-takingly close to extinction.
