Most of the trip was taken up with family meals and nights on the town with friends (and suffering a bit in the morning), but I did get away to do some birding in Melbourne’s top birding spot which isn’t so much a dump as the pits. No wonder they were in their own family for so long! Terrestrial honeyeaters?

Many Neotropical families and genera have some of their northernmost members here, such as the spinetails ( Rufous-breasted Spinetail ), Tangara tanagers ( Azure-rumped Tanager ), and guans ( Horned Guan ). the species suffering most from deforestation). This is a fascinating area of transition. We were off to a great start.

One website I found suggested a few others that may be true but I hadn’t encountered before, are young cranes actually called colts, or falcons eyas? The saddlebacks are both members of the of the New Zealand wattlebird family, which includes the two kokako (one extinct and one… probably extinct) and the sadly lost Huia.

Above the gardens a wheedling just fledged Gymnogene begged fro food from its long suffering parent. Mousebirds are a uniquely African family and they really brought it home to me that I was back in Africa after a decade. To the west a large piece f irrigation machinery served as a perch for a large flock of Amur Falcons.
