Here are some highlights and observations of that very birdy weekend at Selva Bananito: There are a lot of pewees that pass through Costa Rica : Based on past experiences of pewee mania, I already knew this to be the case but this trip really took the cake. Parrots in Costa Rica require plenty of old trees for nesting as well as for food.

Thanks to better protection from hunting, this fancy bird is tame and easy to see at many sites in Costa Rica. Yellow-naped Parrot. Endangered and awesome, it’s pretty easy to experience this big parrot in the Pacific lowlands of Costa Rica from Tarcoles north to near Nicaragua. Buff-fronted Quail-Dove.

But this critically endangered and majestic blue parrot has remained elusive to most of the world and, sniffle sniffle, to me as well. They really appeared to enjoy this, because as soon as they swam back to the rocks they would line up again to repeat the experience. It seemed like a really fun way to spend the day!

Sadly the great gannet colonies during the July to October period to protect the birds, but if you head up to Boundary Stream you’ll find a good mix of lowland and mountain forest where active management is keeping forest birds going. The centre has a daily feeding of wild Kaka , making it easy to see this large parrot.
