The Lesser White-fronted Goose is one of the most threatened waterfowl species of the Western Palearctic, with illegal killing being the most important threat globally. I counted them very roughly, but I do have a lot of experience estimating flocks. Stopping here and there to scope the mudbar…. I’ll play with my mobile phone.

Number 8 – Brown Pelican. During my favorite birding event of the year, the annual Big Sit at Fort Tilden in Queens in October , we had hit a lull and were desperately trying to scrape up a few more species when Matthieu spotted a pelican and all was right with the Big Sit once again. I loved that I was seeing them at all!

I don’t really know – from my own experience with school bullies or from Jack London’s novels? Lucky and his instructor were successful in bluffing this particular bear, yet the very next year in the same area, Hoshino was killed by a Brown Bear. Pelican, Pelecanus spp. How did I know that? Japanese quail, Coturnix japonica.

Multitudes, hundreds of Brown Pelicans and Terns–Least, Common, Foster’s, Sandwich, Royal, and Caspian. This was the High Island Experience, I was told. This was a mature bird and if I lightened this photo you’d be able to see the red gular sac deflated against its chest. It was amazing.

Marabous have also learnt another trick, and that is to follow vultures and scavenge off the remains of Lion and other large predator kills. They have even been known to kill children who have been incautious enough to approach too closely.
