This is the story of Fox’s experiences on board the Achiever, the research vessel of the Raincoast Conservation Foundation. She is one of the best nature writers I’ve encountered in recent years, able to paint experiences with emotional immediacy. Although we are not close nor on a direct course, the geese are skittish.

Magpie Geese, Purple Swamphen, Brolga and Pied Heron near the boardwalk The bird hide is shaded well and a nice breeze blows through it to save you from the dry 40c (105f) September days. There are informative paintings of the birdlife that you may experience and benches positioned well for observing the area.

If your CBC experience is anything like mine here in eastern New York, you’ll be counting an awful lot of crows. Now that Fish Crows ( Corvus ossifragus ) have established themselves as year-round residents of the Hudson Valley, we get a little more corvid variety, but even they ceased to qualify as rare birds some time ago.

The Grebes were gone, but present were the ever ubiquitous Canada Geese. Some people, one or two of my family members included, hate Canada Geese with a passion that rivals their hatred for mosquitoes (if you’re from Maine, or New England at all, you know that hatred runs deep). Weather is weird. Mallard in a lovely place.

During this time, the fish trapped in the shrinking pools of water attract hordes of herons, egrets, storks, and other wetland species. The incredible lighting at dawn in the Pantanal is an experience in of itself. Screamers are most closely related to waterfowl such as ducks and geese. I must mention one thing.

Other birds with webbed feet, including ducks and geese, have only three webbed toes; the hallux (which in birds is usually the “hind toe&# and in humans, the “big toe&# ) is free. They are all primarily fish-eaters adapted for life in the water and the air. That is to say, all four of their toes are webbed.

Consider this thought experiment. Eagles are supposed to leave the wintering grounds, where lakes and rivers freeze over and there is no fishing and there are few other things to eat, migrating to larger water bodies or to the south. Any of them, really, not just the one I saw today.
