From what I’ve been hearing, sport hunters are chomping at the bit to also return to the forest in droves. During a two-year long moratorium on hunting in T&T, I had some of the most incredible birding experiences. Within the same tree, a pair of Golden-olive Woodpeckers were also poking around.

In addition to Pileated Woodpecker, the Second Atlas of Breeding Birds in Pennsylvania documents increases in numbers of Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Hooded Warbler, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Carolina Wren, Alder Flycatcher, Common Raven, Wild Turkey, and, of course, Canada Goose.

Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. So you can imagine our disappointment when we crawled out of the car after our trip to find out that Mike was in fact relaxing in the warm kitchen and had no idea where the woodpecker was! Why is that awesome?

I have had similar experiences at Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge and you are so right on when you say “am I ever glad that I am a birder!&# It was a great experience. What a spectacle indeed.
