Incidentally, encounters with both aardvarks and zorillas are rare – it’s much easier to see lions and leopards. Lion – much easier to see than an Aardvark In contrast to East Africa, encounters with mammals while out birding in Europe are relatively few. Why not the stoat family or the badger family?)

On that first trip, I even saw some of the last 500 (Asiatic) Lions ! Despite depicting 540 species/56 families, it is a lightweight book of 173 pages, easy to pack and carry. I clearly needed a mammal book. It also covers Andaman, Nicobar and Laccadive islands. monkeys, deer, gazelles, etc.).

It’s the only park I have ever been to that not only have I seen all five of the Big Five (Lion, Leopard, African Buffalo, White Rhino and African Elephant) in, but seen them all on the same day. Lions are boring and should be avoided on safari, but I quite liked this one, even if he had ticks. Purple Roller.

They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!). In Asia they are even commonly kept as pets!

For 9 months of the year, this great, bellowing herd can be found in the Serengeti and watching the long lines of grunting wildebeest moving across the plains is truly a remarkable experience. And of course the big game is an added bonus.

There’s an imperative to get this message across to cat people who, like me, can be educated to value wild lives as much as we value the lives of our four-legged family members. It’s tribal and familial. If the experience of handing over that box can be transformative instead of alienating or shaming, there’s a possibility of change.

No, the usual birding opportunity at zoos and parks is one of watching feeding and preening behaviour, or parenting and social interactions. Beware of Crocodiles.
