Where did the Coney Island Gray-hooded Gull come from, Africa or South America? I kept wishing I had Rare Birds of North America , by Steve N. I had just started reading it, but I knew that this was the book my birding friends, in fact all North American birders who are fascinated by vagrants, have been waiting for.

Perhaps just once in a decade, the UK experiences an invasion of Painted Ladies , Vanessa ( Cynthia) cardui. Anyone in North America might know them as Cosmopolitan Butterfly. Painted Ladies are part of the Aristocrat group of butterflies. The Aristocrat group is not a recognised classification group.

I’ve been learning to band birds at the South Florida Bird Observatory. But hands-on bird experience has been a major gap in my knowledge to date and I’m astounded at how much more I’m discovering about birds. I hope to have another experience with ole Bucket Mouth when I’m next out at the nets.

Podilymbus podiceps is most certainly common in my experience, able to be seen consistently across varied habitats throughout nearly all of North America and much of South America. The Pied-billed Grebe , a most wondrous waterfowl, perfectly exemplify the distinction between common and mundane.

Florida is perhaps the one place in the United States where you can rack up a pretty great list of birds, including some of North America’s most impressive species, simply by walking down the sidewalk for an hour or so. That was largely due to the vagaries of a single rental car and two young children, but it wasn’t so bad.

They are species that breed in the US and then spend the winter in Central and South America, eating what’s avialable–especially fruit. Fruit is something that migratory birds could eat and worth trying in your yard in North America. Grape jelly for orioles was an experiment too.
