Meanwhile, on The Zoo, the keepers have been creating an environment for Thelma and Louise so they can nurture the hoped-for egg from The Stud and Serendipity.

We have photographs and newspaper obituaries of Martha, the last living Passenger Pigeon, who died after a lifetime in captivity, mostly in the Cincinnati Zoo. The chapter on Martha, for example, just shows a close-up of her stuff body–not the whole body, the torso and tail–against an almost-black background.

I worked with a pair of motmots at a US zoo and fell in love with their vibrant colors and unique tails.

An interesting overview summarizing the research on the world’s 20 stork species finds that of the almost 1000 papers on storks published between 1950 and 2022, only 2 are on Storm’s Stork while all other stork species have at least 11 papers, and often many more (371 in the case of the White Stork).

Apparently, both parts of the Latin name Nucifraga caryocatactes basically just mean nutcracker, even though the second part sounds more like the name of a Brazilian samba band.

I guess most scientists would love to see their original research become the basis for a vast field of further studies. For example , constructing a nest took 18 to 83 days in one study, with an average of 57 days – the quickest thus needed less than a quarter of the time required by the slowest. Poor creatures.
