A crest is a “comb or tuft of feathers, fur, or skin on the head of a bird or other animal” Birds use them for display purposes – they can be either recumbent (not noticeable when not erect) or recursive (noticeable in all states). Quite a few bird species have crests.

The species is listed as Vulnerable – the estimated number of individuals is 4600-5100 (HBW), of which about 2000 winter on Hokkaido. There is a book on the species, but it is out of print and seems impossible to find even in online secondhand bookstores. Where is the movie about his life then? Back to the eagle.

The same would apply for land animals (for example seagull). I only taxonomy from phylum to family, since i feel like there wouldnt be much reason to include genus, since a lot of genuses only have a couple of species and since you should be able to guess the animal by knowing the family and where it lives, size etc.

For example on my trip to Australia earlier this year I borrowed the car one day to drive to Ku-Ring-Gai National Park, a location that proved fruitful for Clare later in the year. I only saw a few species I could get in the small park near where I was staying, and not even as many as I could have gotten there.

It’s not fecal material, but parts that are not digestible like fur, bones and the exoskeletons of insects. For example, since eagles and hawks tend to rip their prey apart and have stronger digestive acids, their pellets look like wads of fur. Birds will barf them back up out of their mouths.

But, I did take many photos, and used the book, in spurts during the trip and more closely afterward, to identify three seabird species, two expected (Sooty and Black-vented Shearwaters) and one a surprise. It does not include near-shore, coastal species, like Brown Pelican, Elegant Tern, and Harbor Seal.
